Indian Claims Commission reports, ca. 1966-1971.

Summary: This collection includes copies of some of the cases involving Native American groups requesting reparation from the federal government from 1966 to 1971. It consist mostly of appraisals of lands and mineral resources in the contested areas. The tribes attempted to prove their ownership of the land; if the ownership was established, it was then necessary to determine the value of the land at the time of the original transfer. To establish ownership of land, reliance was placed on testimony of anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, historians, and economists in the absence of written records. The Arizona tribes included are the Hualapai, Tohono O'odham, Yavapai, Mohave, and Chiricahua Apache. The materials present for each tribe vary. Highlights include an annual report on groundwater in Arizona, 1965 to 1967; an appraisal of mines and mineral resources in Santa Cruz and Pinal County (Tohono O'odham) that includes brief histories of mines in these areas; a summary history of the Mohave Indians; and a history of land use by the Chiricahua Apache. There are also materials about the Shosone, Sioux and Chippewa tribes including considerations of the Black Hills area.
